In the first seven days of June, San Clemente already saw over 25 car accidents. While a number of car accidents occurred in downtown San Clemente, with S El Camino being hit especially hard, a vast majority of these car accidents have occurred on the Avenida sides streets throughout town. While a significant portion of the car accidents in San Clemente had injuries reported on the scene, most of the car accidents were logged by the Orange County Sheriff as non-injury accidents.
Distracted Drivers?
As attorneys experienced in dealing with car accidents in San Clemente, we can tell you that an uptick in car accidents during June is nothing new for our beloved town. With warm weather drawing people to the beach, an increase in car accidents being reported to attorneys in San Clemente. It's a simple and unfortunate byproduct of more traffic. Also, with less experienced drivers out of school for the summer, the number of car accidents in San Clemente always seem to rise. Distracted driving is always a concern in San Clemente, but it seems like everyone gets even more distracted when the sun first comes out.
According to the Center for Disease Control, "Each day in the United States, approximately 9 people are killed and
more than 1,000 injured in crashes that are reported to involve a
distracted driver. Distracted driving is driving while doing another activity that takes
your attention away from driving. Distracted driving can increase the
chance of a motor vehicle crash." The CDC further reports that drivers under the age of 20 have the highest proportion of distraction-related fatal crashes and, in 2017, 9% of all teen motor vehicle crash deaths involved distracted driving.
Hit and Runs Reported
The first week of June also saw an increase in hit and run accidents in San Clemente. Our attorneys were informed of a hit and run felony accident (with injuries) on June 3rd and a hit and run misdemeanor charge related to an accident just the day before on June 2nd. The difference between a (Vehicle Code 20002) misdemeanor hit and run and felony hit and run lies in whether or not someone was injured in the accident. While a misdemeanor hit and run concerns property damage, a felony hit and run is concerned with whether an injury resulted. You can be charged with felony hit and run in CA, under Vehicle Code 2002, if someone else was injured or killed in the accident.
